This Genuine NZ Greenstone Hook Necklace has a small notch carved into the lower edge.
Otherwise it is quite a traditionally shaped pounamu hei matau.
The greenstone is sourced from the Hokitika region of New Zealand, on the west coast of the South Island.
It is then carved into this approximately 4.4cm (1 3/4") long fish hook.
The fish hook is very important to Maori, practically as well as spiritually. In Maori mythology, Maui hooked the North Island from the sea. And the fish hook was, and still is, an important implement to get food. Spiritually, the fish hook design represents peace, prosperity and good health, and safe travel over water. So it is a great gift for the surfer, fisherperson, yachtie, swimmer.
The hei matau comes to you on a descriptive card, so you can always remember its spiritual meaning. The green stone hook hangs from a long black adjustable cord.
