The carved bone hooks are approximately 4.2 cm (1 5/8") long. They are made from New Zealand cow bone.
The Maori Hook ( hei matau) design is an important Maori symbol, as the Maori God Maui was believed to have hooked a mighty fish that became the North Island of New Zealand. And with such a reliance on the sea for food, the fish hook is extremely important.
