This beautifully carved Maori Koauau is a replica of the traditional Maori flute.
The Koauau flute was originally carved from wood or bone, and sometimes stone. The bone would be bird bone, from the moa or albatross.
The koauau is a side blown flute. Purse your lips as if you are about to whistle, and then position the koauau against your lips, as if you are blowing across the end (not directly into the end). Turn the koauau until you make your best sound.
This carved wood Koauau is approximately 5 3/4" (14.5cm) long and has two pieces of New Zealand paua shell on the sides.
The flute comes to you on a stand.
So you could turn it into a Maori Music award. We can put a gold engraved plate on the side of it. Choose up to 8 words, and enter those in the text box above. (Please note that we cannot take back any engraved items, except in the unlikely event there is something wrong with the engraving).
