This Maori Porotiti Musical Instrument is a rarely seen Maori wind instrument.
It's a humming disc, with the sound made by centring the totara disc on the cords, holding the cords in two hands, and twirling the cord to make the disc spin.
The kaitiaki (guardian) associated with the porotiti is Tawhirimatea, the God of the Winds.
The porotiti makes a soft humming sound.
It is considered to be a healing disc, played above sleeping babies to break up mucus in blocked noses and ears.
This porotiti is made from native timber Totara and measures approximately 8cm x 5cm (3" x 2"). Carved by James, a carver of Ngati Kahungungu/ Tu Wharetoa descent, and a graduate of the NZ Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotorua.
Shipped in a kete bag, worldwide.
