This combination of a NZ Maori Kotiate Club and an engraved stand would make an excellent trophy or 21st gift.

The kotiate is a pre-European weapon used for close combat.  The carved notches were apparently so they got entwined with the combatant's intestines, as per the translation of the word kotiate, which means "to cut liver".

Kotiate were usually made from whale bone or a hardwood.  This one is made from Pacific Kauri. As per traditional carving, the butt of the handle is carved with a Maori face symbol, embellished with paua shell eyes.  As in this example, the traditional kotiate had a cord threaded through the butt end, which would be wrapped around the warrior's hand so it was not lost in battle.

This kotiate is approximately 31.8cm (12 1/2") long.  The stand measures approximately 39.5 x 8.5 x 3.2cm (15 1/2" x 3 3/8" x 1 1/4"), minus the struts.  It has a Koru design engraved into the top and the front.  This still leaves plenty of room for engraving the recipient's name or the name of the trophy.  If you would like us to organise the engraving, enter the words in the box above.  The price includes up to 5 words.
