This small imitation greenstone mere is perfect for kids to use at kapa haka.
Ideal for schools, pre-schools, and at home.
The replica greenstone mere is made from MDF, so it's nice and lightweight. Its length is approximately 21.7cm (8 1/2"), and it hangs from a rope cord.
Attached to the cord is a card with lots of information about the mere, as follows:
The Mere is a flat, tear-drop shaped club, 250 - 450mm long, crafted from pounamu (greenstone), and used by Maori as a thrusting and striking weapon in close hand-to-hand combat. Its rounded apex and sides were ground to a sharp edge which narrowed to form a handle, terminating in a reke (heel), marked by several grooves. There was a hole through the reke for a wrist thong to ensure the weapon was not lost during battle. The mere was a highly prized weapon as it required an incredible amount of work to make. The creation and finishing of a mere pounamu is claimed to have sometimes taken more than one generation to complete. They were passed on from one generation to the next and warriors who carried a mere were considered to possess great strength and mana (authority and respect).
Maori were fierce warriors who conducted most of their warfare in close quarter hand-to-hand combat. Their weapons were designed for the quick thrusting and striking movements typical of this style of fighting. They were crafted from wood, whalebone, greenstone, and stone. Young boys would begine training in the use of weapons at a very young age. Particular attention was paid to dexterity, speed and in particular, strengthening of the wrists, because all of their weapons required quick hand movements. War parties were usually composed of males; however females would sometimes take part. Maori were experts in the art of ambush and surprise raids, appearing and disappearing swiftly and noiselessly into the thick New Zealand rainforest.
