This beautifully carved piece of New Zealand timber inlaid with Paua ( abalone) shell, depicts the Maori Fish Hook, a very important and symbolic item.
Maori mythology relates the story of the god Maui, who used a fish hook to "fish" up the North Island of New Zealand. And fish hooks were of great importance to pre-European Maori, as the sea was an essential food source.
Thus the fish hook, or Hei Matau is an important symbol, an expression of good luck, health and prosperity. It is also a good luck, for catching positive energy and for safe travel over water.
This fish hook measures approximately 14" (35.5cm) long. It comes with a hole in the back so you can hang it on your wall. It's a wonderful item to keep as a spiritual good luck charm, it's a very attractive decorative item, and it makes an excellent addition to a collection of Maori carvings.
