Matakupenga is the name of this Maori Tattoo Bone Necklace designed by master carver Jeff Bryan. Jeff is of Ngati Raukawa and Te Atihaunui-a-Paparangi descent, with both Maori and Scottish heritage.
The bone necklace is in the shape of a Maori fish hook. The Hei Matau (fish hook) design carries a spiritual meaning of good health, prosperity, and abundance. It is also a good luck charm for safe travel over water.
The Matakupenga tattoo design incorporates a net pattern believed to bind the living together and link them to the life force of the ones who have passed on.
The Bone Hook Necklace measures approximately 5.5cm (2 1/4") long. It hangs from a long black plaited adjustable cord and comes to you in a box with a card detailing the elements of its design.
