Toki Pounamu - New Zealand Greenstone Toki adze, mostly hei toki necklaces, but also toki poutangata, the ceremonial adze created from pounamu and lashed to a carved wooden handle. The toki poutangata was carried by those of mana and authority, and used for ceremonial purposes, such as the felling of a special tree to make a waka or the ridgepole of a wharenui. It was not used for everyday carving. So the hei toki, the toki necklace, is a symbol of power, strength, wisdom and authority. Both the hei toki and toki poutangata are popular birthday gifts.
